"Helping children recognise and communicate their needs for better support at school."
What are interoception Advocacy Cards?
Interoception is our body's internal sense—helping us recognise when we’re hungry, thirsty, tired, in pain, or needing the toilet. Many children, especially those with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, or additional needs, struggle to interpret these signals, making it difficult to express what they need.
These Interoception Advocacy Cards have been designed to help children and families communicate their interoceptive needs effectively in an educational environment. They provide a simple yet powerful way for children to recognise their body signals, express their needs, and advocate for support in school.
About the cards:
Â
How these cards will help:
Â
- To help children identify and understand their body signals (e.g., hunger, thirst, tiredness, sensory overload).
- To give children a visual and structured way to express their needs in school.
- To empower families to advocate for their child’s interoception needs with teachers and school staff.
- To help teachers, SENCOs, and support staff recognise interoception challenges and provide the right support.
- To promote independence and self-regulation, making school a more comfortable and successful experience for the child.

Â
Who are the cards for?
Â
🌟 Children who struggle to recognise or communicate body signals (e.g., hunger, thirst, emotions, pain).
🌟 Parents & caregivers who want to advocate for their child’s interoception needs in school.
🌟 Teachers, SENCOs & support staff who work with children needing additional support in self-awareness and emotional regulation.
🌟 Therapists & well-being practitioners supporting children with interoceptive awareness challenges.
Challenges children may experience without support?
-
Forgetting to eat or drink because they don’t recognise hunger or thirst signals.
-
Not noticing when they need the toilet until it’s urgent, leading to distress.
-
Struggling with emotional regulation because they don’t link body sensations to feelings.
-
Finding it hard to self-advocate (e.g., unable to explain discomfort or sensory overload).
-
Becoming overwhelmed or dysregulated in school without knowing why.
Without support, these difficulties can impact concentration, behaviour, emotional well-being, and overall school experience.
